Week 7: Story Line

Hey everyone, it has been over a year, but the blog is ALIVE! So make sure to check back often and check out what we are up to at the Language Exchange Program at UC Irvine!

~Kyle

Team 1: the Japanese team of 6, spread out their collection of pictures and begin taking turns tying the pictures together with an interestingly silly story.
Last week was week 7, and we played a game where we split into two groups to tell a story by connecting random pictures that were given. Some pictures included a man riding a unicycle, someone walking a dog in their car, and a man hugging a giant fish!

The plot thickens on the other side with the Chinese team of 8, as the group sits around the table and develops an interesting story with all of the pictures laid out across the table.
Our groups shared the wacky stories to each other and then combined to do a group story. We each got a photo and “popcorned” around the circle to tell a new story using the picture we had.

The groups gather around the Chinese group's table and exchange stories. Followed by a super story that uses all of the pictures and a few improv ideas.
After a story about an alien cat, heroic dog, and crazy truck driver, we split up into small conversation groups. It was nice to interact with everyone in a group activity, instead of going into separate groups like usual. I hope to get to know all of you more!

:)

Have a great summer~

Sorry I wasn't able to update everyone on the last 2 weeks.  Hopefully everyone is taking care of their finals well.

Week 9, we had the Duan Wu Jie where we ate Zong Zi and learned new vocabulary to make our own story.  It was a depressing and funny story, but a story nonetheless.

Week 10, we went over to Steelhead's Brewery for $5 pizzas.  It was surprising, but we ate it all.

I just want to take the time to thank everyone who came out to our meetings, making new friends, and learning new things.  I would also like to thank the staff members of LXP for sticking around and making an awesome year for the club, for the members, and for me.  It's been an honor being the Web manager and historian of LXP.  Have a great summer everyone and see you around campus next year.

Conversation Night - Technology

Hey everyone, thanks for coming out last night and joining us in our discussion of modern day social networks.  I've heard a lot about twitter in the past, but last night was the first time I actually saw what it actually looked like.

We looked at other social networks both chinese and english.  Afterwards we got a bit into watching videos off of Youtube and reading posts off of Engrish.com and the Fail site.

Next week, we'll be changing our room.  Most likely back to HH 224, so be sure to look out for e-mail and facebook to see where it will be at.  Not sure what we're doing exactly, but I heard something about eating and dragon boat.  Hope to see you all back next week.

Game Night

Thank you for those who came to the meeting, it was really fun and we actually used Mandarin today!!!  We had 2 tables playing Mah Jong, and there were both people that were new to it and people who already knew how to play teach.

The 3rd table played various card games such as Poker, Black Jack, Mafia, and BS.  We tried our best telling the stories while playing Mafia in Mandarin as well as counting in Chinese for BS.

Don't forget that tommorrow from 11AM-2PM we will be in front of HIB selling Jamba Juice.  Also, be sure to join us for next weeks meeting for Conversation Night: Technology and Internet lingo in English and Chinese.  Hope to see you all there!

Cinco de Mayo

Hey Everyone, sorry for the last post again.  Hopefully everyone was on top of their mid-terms and school work the past week (or at least did a better job of taking care of them compared to me).  Last week, we celebrated Cinco de Mayo with the rest of the club and got some fish tacos from Rubio's!

We learned some new words for English, Chinese, and Spanish, got a little carried away and started learning about other languages too.  It's good to see so many people joining our meetings now, it makes it a lot more lively.

Tonight is game night, and from what I heard, we have 4 sets of Mah Jong.  This is one of our most popular events we have each quarter.  Even though people don't know how to play, they're still interested in learning, which makes it a fun experience for everyone!  Gonna go check it out now and then report back on the meeting soon after.

Conversation Night - "What's in a Name?"

Hey everyone, thanks for coming out last week for conversation night.  It was good to see some new faces, I hope we keep getting more new members.

Last week, we played "2 truths and a lie" where everyone guesses which one is the lie.  We get to learn interesting facts about each other.  The main event of the night was to learn about what our Chinese (or other native language) name means.  We had a lot of help as many people knew what their Chinese/Japanese/Vietnamese name is.

This week, we will be having drinking games in the same room as last week. (sorry, no alcohol).

Spring Kick-off!

Yay!  It's Springtime and the last quarter of the school year!  Let's make it a good one because this may be the last quarter LXP exists unless we find a successor to our club.  If you're interested in taking over next year, please speak with either Amanda or Debbie.  Anyways, I apologize for taking so long before having a recap of our meeting earlier this week.  The past two weeks has been difficult with tons of work, but we all still came out this week and got to meet some new members!  Also, I hope those who participated in the easter event at Aldrich park had fun this morning.  On tuesday, we all introduced ourselves and got to know what LXP was all about.  We had snacks and drinks as usual while playing game such as Cranium!

Be sure to join us for the up coming meeting as it will be Speed dating, one of our most popular events we have each quarter!  Do not be intimidated by the word "dating" as it will be a casual event where everyone gets a chance to meet various people and make new friends (or even develop a relationship along the way!)  Hope to see you all there and Happy Easter!

Spring Kickoff!

Ni Hao everyone!  Welcome back, and hopefully you had a wonderful spring break.  We're going to be having our Spring Kickoff this Tuesday 4/7 (HH 224) from 6PM-8PM.  We'll have food and refreshments ready and an awesome presentation to get those who are new to the club familiar with the activities that we have throughout the quarter.  This is our last quarter of the school year, so let's make it a great one.  Hope to see you all there!

Music Exchange

Ah, sorry everyone!  It seems I forgot to take pictures this week.   But, at least we have memories from the music we listened to?

Anyways, we had everyone bring in laptops, mp3 players, ipods, walkmans, CDs, and flashdrives and shared with the rest of the club in what music each of us listens to.  We started the meeting out by playing a fun ice breaker game that you can try out right now:

Music Questionaire!

1. Put your iTunes (or whatever music player) on Shuffle.
2. For each question, press the next button to get your answer.
3. You must write down the name of the song no matter how silly it sounds!
4. Put any comments in brackets after the song name.

If someone says are you okay, you say:

What do you like in a guy/girl?

What is your life purpose?

What is your motto?

What do your friends think of you?

What do you think of your parents?

What do you think about very often?

What is 2+2?

What do you think of your best friend?

What do you think of the person you like?

What’s your life story?

What do you want to be when you grow up?

What do you think when you see the person you like?

What will you dance to at your wedding?

What will they play at your funeral?

What is your hobby/interest?

What is your biggest fear?

What is your biggest secret?

What do you think of your friends?

How would you describe yourself?

Seem familiar?  I got this idea from being tagged on Facebook with these same questions.  It's really fun, and sometimes you get really interesting answers.  After the ice breaker, we got paired up (but eventually just became groups) and listened to each other's music and learned a bit about each other.

Be sure to join us next week for a recipe exchange event!  Bring in your most well known dish and share it, and the recipe, with the rest of the club.  Hope to see you all there!

Winter Kick-off fun!

Thank you to those who made it to the meeting this week and don't worry for those of you who couldn't, there's always a chance every Tuesday for you to join the fun! This week, we had members from last quarter and new members this quarter come in to find out what the Language Exchange Program (LXP) is all about. We served pizza and refreshments, looked through the quarter activities, and play a few word games to practice our vocabulary in Chinese and English. It was very interesting because I learned not only a few words in Chinese, but also the meanings of a few English vocabularies as well.
If you have any questions or comments, please send a message on facebook to any of our cabinet members or e-mail us (e-mail on side bar on the right). If you have any suggestions on what you would like to do at our club meetings or ways to improve it, feel free to write a comment on our latest posts on this page or e-mail us. Thanks again and hope to see you all on Tuesday for our Mah Jong Night!
